Steel stock pressure

STEEL plants in China are seeing growing output but falling orders, renewing concerns of excess inventories, an industrial index showed.

The Purchasing Managers’ Index of the steel sector continued to slide to 49.1 in April, according to the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing. The sub-index for production rose for the fourth straight month to an almost one-year high while that for new orders and prices fell below the 50 boom-bust line for the first time this year.

Landmark purchase

CC Land Holdings, a firm run by Chinese property tycoon Cheung Chung-kiu, has agreed to buy London’s “Cheesegrater” skyscraper for 1.15 billion pounds (US$1.49 billion), Xinhua reported yesterday.

The Hong Kong-based developer announced the acquisition of the Leadenhall Building, the tallest building in London, which is known as the Cheesegrater because of its wedge shape.

Casino revenue

MACAO’S casino revenue in April grew for a ninth month as the return of high-stakes players to the gaming hub gained momentum.

Gross gaming receipts rose 16.3 percent to 20.2 billion patacas (US$2.5 billion), according to data released by Macao’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau. That follows an 18.1 percent jump in March.
