Ex-official on trial for corruption, bribery
    2017-June-12  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

JI ZHEN, former vice head of the Nanshan District Government, stood trial Thursday at Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court on charges of corruption and taking bribes totaling 5.7 million yuan (US$838,470), US$10,000 and stocks worth 1 million yuan.

Ji was also charged with embezzling 685,000 yuan in funds for science and research. According to prosecutors, Jiang, a vice chairman with Coolpad Group, offered US$10,000 to Ji before the 2013 Spring Festival, in hopes of getting support from Ji for the fund subsidies for its subsidiary Yulong Computer Telecommunications Co. Ltd., which had settled in the district.

Yulong later received a 3-million-yuan subsidy for settling in the district and a 4-million-yuan subsidy for research and the rents of a laboratory, 15 rental apartments as well as the housing rents of 150 rental apartments.

In the first half of 2013, Ji offered to help get approval for science and research funds for a technology company in the district. The company received 2 million yuan in funds. Ji later required that the company sign a technology service contract with a company that was actually controlled by Ji, and then transfer 1 million yuan to the company. The company thought 1 million yuan was too much and following negotiation gave 700,000 to Ji’s company.

Ji was also charged with taking 1 million yuan worth of shares for offering to help a company get a parcel of land at the Liuxiandong Strategic and Newly Emerging Industries Base. Ji denied the charge, saying he had no power in deciding the land use and the company didn’t get the land. He claimed that he had just borrowed 4 million yuan from the company for housing speculation and he thought he could give the money back at the agreed time.

Ji admitted to embezzling 600,000 yuan in science and research funds when he took charge of State and provincial science research projects.

Official documents show that Ji became a teacher at Shenzhen University after he got his doctorate in 1999 and became a professor at 31. He was deputy chief of the Computer and Software College of Shenzhen University and was appointed as vice head of the Nanshan District Government in 2011.

Ji was probed by the city’s Party disciplinary inspection commission last April and was later arrested for alleged bribery. (Han Ximin)
