Show canceled

AMAZON has canceled its F. Scott Fitzgerald period drama “The Last Tycoon.” The series starred Matt Bomer, Kelsey Grammer and Lily Collins, and its nine episodes centered on machinations of the Hollywood studio system in the 1930s.

The decision arrives days after the retail giant/streamer made an about face and canceled another Fitzgerald drama, the previously renewed “Z: The Beginning of Everything,” starring Christina Ricci as the author’s wife, Zelda Fitzgerald.

Winners

CHLOE ZHAO’S “The Rider,” which took the Directors’ Fortnight prize in Cannes, took the top prize at the Deauville Film Festival, but it’s safe to say that “A Ghost Story” was the big winner. Born in Beijing and raised in England and the United States, Zhao is a producer and director, also known for “Songs My Brothers Taught Me” (2015).

David Lowery’s “A Ghost Story” captured the most awards, taking home the Jury Prize from the main jury, the Revelation prize from a jury tasked with selecting the most innovative film, and the critics’ prize.

New series

A SURVIVAL comedy series exec-produced by Matt Damon has landed a series order at Netflix.

The unscripted series, titled “The Green Beret’s Guide to Surviving the Apocalypse,” is described as an anthology series that combines humor and usable survival skills. Each episode chronicles its own contained apocalypse that the show’s hero somehow manages to survive.

The comedy hails from two military veterans, Shawn Vance, a former U.S. Special Forces Green Beret, and Daril Fanin, an ex-combat medic in the U.S. army. The duo will exec-produce and star in the comedy, which is set for an eight-episode first season.

Death

THE son of former Fox News host Eric Bolling has died, just hours after Fox announced that Bolling was leaving the network.

A sophomore at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Eric Chase Bolling died Friday night.

Bolling said the cause of his son’s death is under investigation but that authorities told him there was “no sign of self harm at this point” and that an autopsy was planned next week. Friday, Fox News Channel said it had parted ways with Bolling, who had been suspended in August following allegations that he sent lewd photos to female co-workers.
