SZ Symphony Orchestra to present ‘Aida’
    2017-September-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will present pieces from “Aida” in a concert featuring Chinese soprano Sun Xiuwei and tenor Gustavo Porta from Argentina. SSO’s artistic director Lin Daye will wield the baton.

“Aida” is an opera by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni. Set in Egypt, it holds a central place in the operatic canon, receiving performances every year around the world. Ghislanzoni’s scheme follows a scenario often attributed to the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, but Verdi biographer Mary Jane Phillips-Matz argues that the source is actually Temistocle Solera.

A graduate of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in the 1980s, Sun has performed title roles in “Turandot,” “Suor Angelica,” “Salome,” “La Gioconda” and “Tosca,” as well as Abigaille in “Nabucco,” Odabella in “Attila,” Amelia in “Un Ballo in Maschera,” Lady Macbeth in “Macbeth,” Senta in “Die Fliegende Hollander” and Elisabeth in “Tannhauser.”

Porta began his studies at the Conservatory of Cordoba and completed further training at the Istituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colon in Argentina.
