Turks and Caicos Islands: beautiful by nature
    2017-October-31  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

James Baquet

The Turks and Caicos Islands have been mercifully abbreviated “TCI.” The name is an amalgam of the names of two groups of islands. The “Turks” are named for the Turk’s cap cactus, which has a red growth at the top that resembles a fez. “Caicos” comes from “caya hico,” the indigenous people’s word for a “string of islands,” or archipelago.

The groups lie in the Atlantic Ocean. They are generally southeast of the Bahamas and north of Hispaniola, the island which includes Haiti and the Dominican Republic. They are east of the southern end of Cuba, with the Inaguas — the southernmost district of the Bahamas — in between.

With the Bahamas (which were also formerly British, as TCI is today), TCI makes up the Lucayan Archipelago, a ragged line that, with the Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles, constitutes the West Indies. These were named for Columbus’s mistaken belief that he had reached India by sailing west from Spain. Columbus may actually have made his first landfall on Grand Turk, the larger of the two Turk Islands, on his historic voyage in 1492.

Cockburn Town, on this same Grand Turk Island, has been the capital since 1766. It is situated about 1,040 kilometers east-southeast of Miami, Florida, the United States.

The Caicos Islands have several main parts: the westerly Providenciales, the most populous island by far, with about 75 percent of the population; West Caicos (inhabited by resort staff only); North Caicos (2,066 inhabitants); Middle Caicos, the largest island (522); East Caicos (uninhabited); and South Caicos (2,013).

The first certain sighting of the islands was two decades later, when the Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon — famed for his supposed search for the mythical Fountain of Youth — saw them in 1512. As usual, several European powers vied for the islands, with the British prevailing. Long considered an offshoot of the Bahamas, they attained their own identity when that island nation became independent of Britain in 1973. They have since been a separate autonomous British Overseas Territory with their own governor, though their self-rule was suspended from 2009 to 2012 over allegations of corruption in the government.
