‘Toilet revolution’

China should continue to upgrade the country’s toilets as part of its “toilet revolution” aimed at developing domestic tourism and improving people’s life quality, President Xi Jinping said.

The construction of clean toilets is an important part of pushing urban and rural civilization*, and more efforts should be made in both cities and rural areas to upgrade toilets, Xi said in a recent instruction on the achievement of toilet revolution carried out in the tourism sector.

Teacher detained

A female teacher was detained on Saturday on suspicion of child abuse at a Beijing kindergarten, according to local police.

Beijing police said the teacher surnamed Liu, 22, was detained on suspicion of child abuse at the RYB Education New World kindergarten in Chaoyang District. Several teachers at the kindergarten have been suspended from duty, pending a police investigation in the child abuse claims. Meanwhile, a 31-year-old woman has been arrested for disrupting social order by spreading false information about molestation allegations, according to the police.

Safety checks

Authorities are checking and handling potential safety hazards, especially fire risks, in every village, courtyard and company in Beijing, after a fire killed 19 people last week.

The main targets of the ongoing 40-day checks are buildings and factory sites simultaneously* used for storage, production and housing, a Beijing Municipal Work Safety Committee spokesperson said. He said the “blanket search and investigation campaign” had identified over 25,000 potential safety hazards, some of which were “shocking.”

Ningbo explosion

Two people were killed and many injured in an explosion at the site of a demolished factory in the city of Ningbo in East China’s Zhejiang Province on Sunday, according to local authorities.

More than 30 people were taken to hospital, with two injured seriously, after the accident which occurred at 8:50 a.m. in Jiangbei District, local authorities said. Local police said many nearby residential communities were affected by the explosion. (SD-Agencies)
