Practicing English on my summer holiday
    2017-December-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

How time flies! We enjoyed a long summer holiday, but I still don’t think it was long enough! I felt it was very nice because I have learnt some new English words and practiced my spoken English a lot.

In the first week, I went to Hong Kong to visit my older sister. There are three people at her home: my sister Emma, her husband John and their baby Edward. There was also a Filipino maid at her home, too. Her name is Kusting, and she takes care of Edward. She is always delightful and patient. We talked about her country and her family in English.

During the first weekend, I went to Hong Kong Disneyland with my cousins by subway. It was far from my sister’s home. We played a lot of games there. Some were exciting, while some were frightening. For example, we rode the roller coaster four times that day. I think we must have been crazy. The roller coaster was not big, but it made people feel frightened. How brave we were!

For the second week, I went to Hong Kong again because Kusting had to go back to her country and take her one-month holiday.

We are both children, so we couldn’t stay at home without an adult. Emma and John had to take us to Uncle Ray’s home, because there is a Filipino maid there.

I knew Ray’s family grew up in Canada, and Canada is an English-speaking country, so they spoke English very fast. Why was I unhappy when we went to talk with them for the first time? It was because I couldn’t talk with them in English! I couldn’t understand them because they said a sentence as fast as a word. Then one day, I felt so brave that I offered to talk to them in English and I learned some new words from them. Although I can’t speak English very well, I was excited because I could try to do something I like.

Don’t be shy; be brave, and you will become better! Try to do something hard and right. Let’s remember, “All things are difficult before they are easy!”
