杰克苏
    2017-December-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Meaning:

“杰克” is a man’s name “Jack,” and “苏” is a surname “Sue.” This term was coined by Chinese netizens in contrast to Mary Sue, an idealized and seemingly perfect fictional character. Chinese netizens use the term to refer to men, as represented by Ye Hua played by Mark Chao, the male lead from Chinese fantasy drama series “Eternal Love” (better known as “Three Lives Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms” in Chinese). The character is handsome, intelligent, wealthy, successful and devoted to his love, whose many desirable traits made him the perfect dream lover of young girls. In the English word, people may use “Marty, Gary, Gary Stu, or Larry Stu” as male variants of “Mary Sue.” This type of character is often recognized as an author insert or wish fulfillment, and therefore, represents a narcissistic personality.

Example:

A: 你喜欢的男演员是谁?

Nǐ xǐhuan de nán yǎnyuán shì shuí?

Who is your favorite actor?

B: 黄晓明。

Huángxiǎomíng。

Huang Xiaoming.

A: 他总是演很杰克苏的角色。我不喜欢他。

Tā zǒngshì yǎn hěn jiékèsū de juésè。Wǒ bù xǐhuan tā。

He’s so narcissistic and always playing the Gary Stu-type roles. I don’t like him.
