Here comes Lo Ta-yu
    2017-December-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Veteran Taiwanese singer-songwriter Lo Ta-yu will give a solo concert Jan. 27, 2018.

Since the 1980s, Lo has infected Chinese pop and rock music with the melodic lyrics and witty social commentary infused in his songs. He is recognized as a major cultural icon in China.

Stylistically, Lo defies classification, though his contributions to the Taiwanese campus folk genre are the most significant. His early music showed strong folk roots and many of his songs tap into Taiwanese cultural influences. What captured the hearts of his generation, however, were his lyrics, which touched upon issues of life, attitudes and social responsibility with dark humor.

In 1982, Lo released his debut album “Zhihuzheye,” the title of which consists solely of grammatical particles from classical Chinese. A ground-breaking album that broadened the horizons of Chinese music and set a new model for Chinese songwriting, it inspired spin-off hits including “Lukang, the Little Town,” “Love Song 1980” and “Childhood.”

In the 1990s, Lo’s “Love Song 1990,” “Queen’s Road East” and “Pearl of the Orient” began to make him popular on the Chinese mainland.
