Top players to gather for SZ Open
    2017-December-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The 2018 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Shenzhen Open will take place from Saturday to Jan. 6, 2018 at the Longgang Sports Center. This will be the first stop of the WTA tour of the season.

With monetary prizes of up to US$750,000, the 2018 WTA Shenzhen Open has attracted a large number of tennis stars from all over the world, such as Simona Halep, Maria Sharapova, Jelena Ostapenko and Wang Qiang.

Chinese player Wang has won 13 singles and one doubles titles on the ITF circuit in her career. On Oct. 16, she reached her best singles ranking of world No. 46. Wang made her Grand Slam debut at the 2014 U.S. Open, having entered the qualifying tournament and winning three successive matches for a spot in the main draw.

Sharapova is a Russian tennis player who has competed on the WTA tour since 2001. She has been ranked world No. 1 in singles by the WTA on five separate occasions, for a total of 21 weeks. She is one of the 10 women, and the only Russian, to hold the career Grand Slam. She is also an Olympic medalist, having earned the silver for Russia in women’s singles at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Sharapova is an aggressive baseliner with power, depth and angles on her forehand and backhand. She is one of the few players on the WTA tour who often use the reverse forehand.

Halep is a Romanian tennis player who is currently ranked world No. 1 in singles by the WTA. She won her first six WTA titles in 2013, and was then named the WTA’s Most Improved Player at its end, as well as being named ESPN Center Court’s 2013 Most Improved Player. Halep reached the 2014 French Open final, her first Grand Slam final, where she lost to Sharapova in three sets. Halep has self-described her playing style as being “an aggressive baseliner” and “she models her game on Justine Henin.”

Ostapenko is a Latvian tennis player who reached her best singles ranking of world No. 7 in the WTA in October and she peaked at world No. 32 in the WTA doubles rankings in June. At the 2017 French Open, Ostapenko became the first player from Latvia to win a Grand Slam tournament, and the first unseeded player to win the French Open since 1933. She has won seven singles and eight doubles titles on the ITF tour. Ostapenko is known for her highly aggressive playing style, including powerful inside-out groundstrokes and a tendency to aim for the lines.
