贫穷限制了想象力
    2018-January-4  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Meaning:

“贫穷” means “poverty,” “限制了” means to “limit,” and “想象力” means “imagination.” Literally translated as “Poverty has limited one’s imagination,” this is a popular saying used by Chinese netizens to mock the huge gap between the rich and common folks. This is equivalent to another saying: “One has no idea how the rich people live.” Having existed for some time, this saying went viral after an online video showed how actress Fan Bingbing’s huge fancy diamond ring has a smaller classical single-diamond ring embedded in it, which can be worn separately.

Example:

A: 听说附近新开了一家餐厅,人均消费千元以上还有很多人排队等位。

Tīngshuō fùjìn xīn kāi le yījiā cāntīng, rénjūn xiāofèi qiān yuán yǐshàng háiyǒu hěnduō rén páiduì děng wèi。

I’ve heard that a newly opened restaurant nearby, with per capita spending surpassing 1,000 yuan, has long queues at its gate as people wait for a seat.

B: 好吧,贫穷限制了我的想象力。

Hǎo ba, pínqióng xiànzhì le wǒ de xiǎngxiànglì。

Well, poverty has limited my imagination.

(I don’t know about rich people’s lives.)
