Road fatalities decline for 13 straight years

SHENZHEN reported a total of 346 deaths in traffic accidents in 2017, a decrease of 16.8 percent over the previous year, which continues 13 years of decline, according to a release of Shenzhen traffic police department yesterday.

This was the biggest decrease in the past five years.

The number of fatalities that happened at night, between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., dropped by 26 percent to 121, statistics showed.

In the entire year, police checked a total of 15,838 DUI violations, including 6,132 drunk driving crimes. The DUIs led to 37 fatalities. Fatal accidents involving pedestrians also dropped by 28 percent to 112 in 2017.

In contrast, traffic accidents involving bikes rose by 48 percent with the popularization of app-based bikes.
