Youth weight management program at SZ middle school
    2018-January-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The weight management program by Guangdong Lyu Shou Charity Fund, called “Giraffe Action” in English, was held at Shenzhen Guangzu Middle School on January 3. The event was jointly undertaken by Horizon Corporate Volunteer Consultancy and Pingshan Datong Social Work Service Center.

According to the person in charge of the fund, Giraffe Action aims to teach youth to manage their weight by focusing on four aspects of health, namely diet, exercise, mood and daily schedule. Their teaching method integrates activity with stillness and is based on proven theories and practices by nutritionists, sports experts and psychologists.

“Do you know that lack of sleep can lead to obesity,” a teacher surnamed Tan from Pingshan Datong Social Work Service Center lectured in front of over 100 seventh-grade students at a Shenzhen Guangzu Middle School lecture hall.

“I didn’t realize the risks of obesity until I listened to the course today. I learned about the importance of weight management. I will pay more attention to it by having a more balanced diet as well as doing more exercise,” said 13-year-old Lin, a seventh grader.

Since its inception last August, the program has been brought to campuses in Guangdong, Yunnan, Shaanxi and Chongqing, delivering weight management know-hows to students. It is said that it plans to reach 100 schools in 10 cities.
