Laporte set to join Man City
    2018-January-31  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

MANCHESTER City is set to sign Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte by triggering his release clause, sources told ESPN FC on Monday.

However, sources in Spain added that Laporte remains in Bilbao at the moment and will only be allowed to undergo a medical with the Premier League leader once his release clause is paid, something that is yet to happen.

The France under-21 international is expected to arrive in Manchester in the next one or two days for a medical before completing his move.

Laporte’s buyout clause of 57 million pounds (US$80.67 million) will make him a club-record signing. Marca reported that Laporte has undergone tests at a private clinic in Bilbao and will bid farewell to Athletic’s staff before traveling to Manchester.

“Aymeric is in Bilbao and that those reports would only happen once the player deposits his buyout clause,” an Athletic source told ESPN FC.

“That has not happened yet. We don’t know if this will happen today, tomorrow or the next day.”

A youth product of Athletic, Laporte, who is under contract with the Basque outfit until June 2020, has started in 19 league games this season.

He was included in the squad for Friday’s 1-1 draw at home to Eibar but did not feature with coach Jose Angel Ziganda saying after the game: “It was my decision. I spoke to Laporte before the game and I didn’t see him in the best condition to play. He hadn’t slept well. He’s had a very busy week.”(SD-Agencies)
