LIU QIANG, former vice governor of Northeast China’s Liaoning Province, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and public office for multiple offenses.

Liu was found in serious violation of the Party’s political code of conduct and rules, including soliciting votes through bribery and lobbying, the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said yesterday.

Gas leak kills 8

EIGHT people were killed and 10 others were hospitalized by a gas leak at an iron works in Guangdong, local authorities said yesterday.

The leak happened around 3 a.m. at Songshan iron foundry in Shaoguan City. Eight people died immediately and the other 10 are now in a stable condition in hospital. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Elephant attack

ONE person has died after being attacked by wild elephants in Southwest China’s Yunnan, local authorities said yesterday.

The tragedy occurred in Lancang County when the elephants charged motorcyclist Luo around 7 a.m. Saturday.
