50,000 on waiting list to get vaccine
    2018-February-12  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE supply of HPV vaccine in Shenzhen can barely meet demand as over 50,000 women are on the waiting list to get the vaccine, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported yesterday.

HPV is short for human papilloma virus. As much as 99.7 percent of cervical cancer patients have been detected to be carriers of HPV in their DNA. Receiving the HPV vaccine can largely prevent cervical cancer in women.

The HPV2 vaccine was introduced to Shenzhen in October last year. Suitable for females aged between 9 and 25 years, the vaccine costs 1,815 yuan (US$287) for three injections over six months. The HPV4 vaccine for women between 20 and 45 years old has been available in Shenzhen since January, at the price of 2,469 yuan for three injections.

Residents can make appointments online for the HPV vaccine by following the public WeChat account Yuemiao (约苗) and filling out an appointment form. Also, by entering the keyword “cervical cancer vaccine” (宫颈癌疫苗) on taobao.com, residents can also access the platform to make an appointment with the hospitals.

Fang, a woman who successfully made a reservation for getting the HPV4 vaccine in Shenzhen, said the waiting time for her to receive the injections is too long.

A Daily Sunshine reporter made a reservation on the public WeChat account Saturday and found that there were 51,520 residents on the waiting list. Residents can get injections at Luohu Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital and Nanshan District People’s Hospital’s Nanyuan Community Clinic.

According to the Luohu hospital, its vaccine clinic can give HPV injections to 50 people per day. Residents can now make a reservation for getting the first and second injections of HPV2 in March and the third injection in June. But the reservation for the first injection of HPV4 is not available until mid-April.

The reporter made a reservation on taobao.com for getting the HPV vaccine at Shenzhen Amcare Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The hospital said its HPV2 and HPV4 vaccines are well-stocked and residents can get their injections the day after they make a reservation. But the HPV2 vaccine costs 2,266 yuan for three injections at the hospital, and the price of the HPV4 vaccine is 3,200 yuan for three injections.

Compared with the HPV2 vaccine, the HPV4 vaccine can prevent more strains of HPV, which is why the supply of the HPV4 vaccine is more scarce nationwide, according to the report.
