Didi Hitch brings 7.58m people home

THE inter-city carpooling service “Hitch” by Didi Chuxing, which matches drivers and passengers who share similar long-distance routes, carried 7.58 million passengers in the first 10 days of the Spring Festival transport season.

The volume via Didi’s Hitch service so far is equivalent to the whole of the passengers that Hitch served during the Spring Festival transport season last year, according to a release by Didi yesterday.

For comparison, it was about 8.42 percent of the volume of rail services and 47.4 percent of air services. It is equivalent to adding an additional 11,347 eight-car high-speed passenger trains to the country’s strained transportation supply, or 42,000 Boeing 737 flights, the company said in a statement yesterday.

The majority of inter-city Didi trips are between 30-100 kilometers and half of them take 1-4 hours. The longest trip was 2,400 kilometers from Ningbo to Chuxiong in Yunnan Province.

Shenzhen ranked second, following Chengdu, among rides booked via Hitch, and is followed by Dongguan, Guangzhou, Quanzhou and Huizhou.

In 10 days, 120,000 pets also went along with their owners back home via Hitch. A total of 17,436 riders were exempted from Hitch fares by car owners, amounting to 1.2 million yuan (US$190,000).

Didi expects to transport 33 million passenger trips total during this year’s Spring Festival transport season via Hitch service.

The annual travel rush around the Spring Festival puts the country’s transport system to the ultimate test. This year, an estimated 3 billion passenger trips will take place by road, rail, air, and waterways during the Spring Festival Transport season.

Launched in 2015, Didi Inter-City Hitch started as a carpool ingservice on the Didi ride-sharing app, which uses AI-based algorithms to match car-owners with passengers who are traveling along similar commuting routes. Didi has been expanding its inter-city Hitch service networks from cities to smaller townships in the past year.
