GD courts announce verdicts against gangsters
    2018-February-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THREE courts in Guangdong Province have recently announced verdicts on gang activity cases. The province is getting tougher on cracking down on underground gangs as part of a nationwide campaign.

A gang leader, Chen Zhiwei, received a death sentence with a 2-year reprieve in Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong Province, on Monday, China Daily reported.

The Guangdong Provincial High People’s Court also fined Chen a total of 18.2 million yuan (US$2.89 million), and Chen forfeited assets worth more than 10 million yuan.

Chen was convicted of organizing mafia-style gangs, monopolizing local markets, drug trafficking, opening underground casinos, provoking conflicts and organizing gang fights in Guangzhou’s Liwan District since 2002, the verdict said.

The gang had caused one person’s death, another person to be seriously injured and many others to be lightly wounded in gang fights, the verdict said.

Chen was also investigated for using his illegal gains to bribe local government officials to seek “protective umbrellas,” according to the verdict.

In addition, 15 members of Chen’s criminal gang were sentenced to serve prison terms of between two and 15 years.

In Yangxi County in the western part of Guangdong, the county’s court sentenced the head of another criminal gang to 12 years behind bars Monday, according to a statement released by the Guangdong Provincial High People’s Court the same day.

Lin Shui was convicted of participating in secret societies, causing intentional injuries, robbery and illegally opening secret casinos in Yangxi County.

Another court in Guangzhou’s Baiyun District sentenced Wu Zhijie, head of a criminal gang, to 11 years and 6 months in prison Monday.

Wu and his gang members were found to have used knives and iron and wooden bars to rob motorists in Baiyun District between April 2016 and April 2017.

The nationwide campaign against gang activity sweeps across all of China. Governments at all levels are set to take more strict measures to counteract criminal gangs.

A work conference on cracking down on underground gangs was held in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province on Monday where city leaders Wang Weizhong and Chen Rugui affirmed the city’s determination to battle criminal gangs. (Zhang Qian)
